Helpless
No more drip from needle
attached to rubber hose.
Half empty bottle
supposed to sustain life
is now useless.
Overused bedpans reek
of retch and piss
I want to puke.
Overhead crucifix
of a dead God
could not do miracles.
Unplugged machine
is wheeled out of the room
with its rusty casters shrieking
amid faint sobs restraining
the closest kin from letting out a wail,
a shout of despair.
I see traces of your limp body
on the crumpled sheet,
which, a few minutes ago
has seen the violence
of your struggle.
your passing
may be a welcome relief –
for now.
In the end I know
where your pain ends
is where mine starts
